| Kindergarteners come to
the library weekly, for 30 minutes, on a fixed schedule throughout the
school year. During that half hour, I typically introduce a simple concept,
read a story, allow them to briefly respond to the story, and they choose a
book to bring home. They are introduced to the library and library workers
as well as the library routine. |
 |
 |
For the first few weeks
of school, they choose the book they want to borrow from a selection we have
set out for them on several round tables. When the children have been
introduced to the skill of browsing and choosing a book from the shelves,
they begin choosing from our picture book section, or "E" books.
|
| Sometime late in the
fall, after they have been introduced to the concept of fiction vs.
nonfiction, they are allowed to check out from the nonfiction as well as the
fiction section of the library. You will be notified when this is about to
happen, as the books they will bring home may change significantly! |

 |
Every effort is made to
help them make appropriate choices. As they are checking out books for
their enjoyment, I make no effort to "steer" them to a specific topic. I do
attempt to gauge their interest and suggest new authors, subjects, etc.
Even in Kindergarten, the range of interests and ability is vast. As we get
to know your children, we can be increasingly helpful in this book selection
process - but, ultimately, I want them to leave the library excited about
their choice! |
