What's Happening
2008/2009
Mr. Catalanotto visited the children at French Hill on Friday, November 21. I
think it is safe to say faculty and children alike thoroughly enjoyed his visit!
|
Ms. Cahill’s class read The Painter by Peter
Catalanotto and then traced their bodies, to prepare for Mr.
Catalanotto’s visit. The tracings can be seen (for a limited time only!)
just before the nurse’s office door.

2nd graders read Dylan’s Day Out and
All I See, and created their own dreams – both in color and in
black and white! |
|
Mr. Catalanotto was dyslexic as a child, but that
didn’t stop him! |

He gave the children some wonderful advice about
writing: what happens to you doesn’t always make a great story. Write
instead about what you WANT and what problems you run into, trying to
get what you want. Of course, children are great story tellers, because
they have many wants! And, if you ask yourself "What if…", you can
create any ending you’d like! |
|
Another sound piece of advice he gave us was – your
first work is usually not your best work. Keep trying! |
 |
 |
Perhaps the most practical bit of advice he gave was
to press lightly when drawing. Don’t erase until you’ve gotten
the picture the way you want it! Young children often fall into a frenzy
of erasing, which just stops the creative flow (and rips the paper!). |
