What's Happening

2008-09

Ms. Jacobs class has just finished learning about research - they know that research is what we do to find answers to our questions!  After searching for answers to their questions about various animals, the children created animal board games to share those facts.
In conjunction with the PTA's spring book fair, we were able to give a brand new book to each child in the school.  Classes came, one at a time, to the cafeteria, where the books were on display for them to look through.  We are so fortunate to have the continued, strong support of our PTA to help convey just how important reading is for every single one of us!

On Tuesday, March 24, Kindergartners and First Graders met author/illustrator Hans Wilhelm.  He talked with the children about having FUN with their writing.  Don't take the first idea that comes into your head!
Mr. Wilhelm showed the children how to use humor, surprise and all your five senses, to make your story the best it can be.
He also explained the process by which a story is made into a bound book - from author's pages that have been redone many times to the "dummy book" to the final printed product.
Mr. Wilhelm made sure the children were moving - kicking, stretching and even, at one point, yelling for help!
The children enjoyed creating their own stories, using the things they had learned, while Mr. Wilhelm illlustrated!

The most important lesson of the day

was to  HAVE FUN!

2nd Graders met Roni Schotter on March 10.

We have enjoyed Mr. Catalanotto's visit, on Friday, November 21,
thanks to the continuing generosity of the French Hill PTA.

Mrs. LiCalzi's class has been coming to the library for a few weeks, to learn about  traditions and how families celebrate special occasions with different traditions.  They then wrote about a favorite family tradition, went to the lab to draw about that tradition and type up their writing.  Finally, they came to back to library to record, where I recorded them reading about their traditions.  Click on the link under the clip art to hear their work!

Mrs.  Luongo's class came to the library to listen to some facts about animals in winter.  They practiced some note taking skills and learned lots of fun facts about how animals cope in the winter.  Next, Mrs. Luongo talked with the children about 5 W poems - poems that answer the questions Who, What, When, Where, and Why.  Finally, the children created their own 5 W poems, from their notes, illustrated their animal and ...VOILA!
Here are their poems for you to enjoy!
