Our school library media centers function as a critical
and central component of the total educational program. In today's society,
the student needs to go beyond the classroom for the information and
stimulation essential to intellectual development. The expansion of
the school curriculum and the proliferation of information require frequent
use of library materials and technology. The question in today's society
is not only, "What do I know?", but also, "How can I
find out?".
The Library Media Specialists of the Yorktown School District are dedicated
to creating stimulating centers of inquiry where a professional staff
and information are readily available. The use of library resources
is promoted for the personal pleasure of all students and staff.
Through implementation of our program design and library
management plan we shall seek to:
-
provide the most current materials and technology
appropriate to the specific needs of the school community
-
provide an educationally effective library program,
integrated in the school's learning program through collaborative
planning with the teachers;
-
provide assistance to members of the instructional
staff by analyzing needs and providing guidance in the choice and
application of media center resources;
-
provide opportunities for critical and creative
thinking;
-
provide learning experiences which will require
individual students to access information through print and audio
visual materials and electronic systems;
-
provide instruction to students in the use of electronic
information-access systems, equipping them to use similar technology
present in many public libraries, institutions of higher learning,
and businesses;
-
provide an environment that will instill in students
a desire for life-long use of libraries for academic, occupational,
and recreational pursuits.
