The Dewey Decimal System The Dewey Decimal System is the numeric
system that most libraries are based on. Through
this system all non-fiction books are organized.
The Dewey Decimal System was first published in 1876 by Melville Dewey.
Over 125 years later, the Dewey Decimal System is used in 135 countries.
It has been translated into Arabic, Greek, Chinese, French, Hebrew,
Spanish, Italian, Korea, Russian, Norwegian, and Icelandic. Each book is listed by a three digit
code running from 000 to 999. The
three digits can be thought of as an address for the book.
The first number would be the state, the second could be considered the
city and the third the street. Each
number helps you get to a smaller area to look for the book. |
