Library Mission
Statement
Yorktown Central School District
Beliefs
Our school library media
center functions as a critical and central component of the total
education program. In today's society, the student needs to go
beyond the classroom for the information and stimulation essential to
intellectual development. The expansion on the school curriculum and the
proliferation of information requires frequent use of library materials
and technology. The question in today's society is not only,
"What do I know?" but also, "How can I find out?"
Mission
The Library Media Specialists
of the Yorktown School District are dedicated to creating stimulating
centers of inquiry with up to date collections, which are staffed by
professionals and are readily available to staff and students.
Goals
Through implementation of our
program and library management plan we seek to:
provide the most current
materials and technology appropriate to the specific needs of the school
community;
provide an educationally
effective library program, integrated in the school's learning program
through collaborative planning with all teachers;
provide assistance to members
of the instructional staff by analyzing needs and providing guidance in
the choice and application of media resources;
provide opportunities for
critical and creative thinking;
provide learning experiences
which will require individual students to access information through print
and electronic media;
provide instruction to
students in the use of electronic media which will equip them to use
similar technology in public libraries, institutions of higher learning
and businesses;
provide an environment that
will instill in students a desire for the life-long use of libraries for
academic, occupational and recreational pursuits.
