The guidance and counseling program at Yorktown High School is designed to aid students in their personal, academic and social growth.

Upon entering the high school, a student is assigned a counselor who remains their counselor until graduation. This provides a great deal of continuity and enables the counselor and the student to build a strong personal relationship. The counselor is able to assess the student's strengths and weaknesses which helps in post high school planning.

The guidance counselor serves many functions at YHS. When a student is making a decision, trying to identify interests, abilities and personal goals, counselors serve as listeners. They help students identify options and come up with responsible choices.

Academically, counselors assist in course selection, career choices, and the college process. They serve as interpreters when student's receive results of standardized tests, high school and regents grades. In addition, counselors serve as mediators when students are dealing with difficult situations.

Overall, the main goal of the guidance center is to make the high school experience a rich and rewarding one for each student.
