But in exactly one year, he wakes up only to find that his life is still exactly as he left it. But not for long. Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Watchmen is a thrilling tale of superheroes whose attempt to save a dying world is thwarted by enemies every chance they get. The watchmen are quite brilliant, and the way that the story is laid out for you in picture panels will keep most people reading for a long time, or maybe even re-reading. The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick This is an excellent book for anyone who is not a harsh critic or cynic. The book definitely brings out the inner child in the reader. The beautiful illustrations and whimsical plot are very absorbing. The writing style is slightly amateurish at times, but this does not take away from the overall appeal of the novel. This is definitely a book for someone who is a dreamer and appreciates stories of others obtaining their dreams. Student: Hallie Evans Rating: |

The Monsters Are Due on Main Street, by Rod Serling This graphic novel held true to the eeriness and weirdness you’d expect from an episode of Twilight Zone. The residents of Maple Street experience a power outage where nothing electric works (including cars and phones). With no explanation but a boy claiming that one of the residents is an alien who is causing this, the residents begin to turn on each other. This evolves into a riot with everyone attacking and accusing each other. Providing great insight to the human condition, this book is captivatingly creepy. Student: Alex Santini Rating: |

The Odyssey of Flight 33, by Rod Serling London-New York flight 33 is on schedule and is in every way routine until a strange phenomenon sends the plane, its crew, and its passengers far off course, not by miles, but by decades. As flight 33 struggles to return home, fear and desperation begin to take their toll. Whether you are looking for simple entertainment or a story laced with complex, deep, philosophical ideas, you will find this story engaging, intriguing, and absorbing. American Born Chinese, by Gene Luen Yang The content of this graphic novel should not be underestimated...it is very powerful. Gene Luen Yang weaves a colorful tale with this work by incorporating cliché Asian stereotypes with deeper messages like social acceptance. A whimsical writer, Yang combines two modern day stories with one ancient Chinese fable and the result is a fantastic collision of past and present that make this read well worth the few hours that it requires. Beware however, the pictures are quite plain. Student: Michael Park Rating: |
