Crompond Fourth Grade Students Participate in Revolutionary War Encampment

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, fourth grade students from Crompond Intermediate School culminated their studies of the life and the American Revolution with a day of living history, reenacting life in an encampment during that period.  This year, Jonathan Kruk, “Best Storyteller in the Hudson Valley,” came to teach students through a variety of activities designed to stimulate hands-on learning.

Students stepped back in time and dressed as American Revolutionary soldiers, working with teachers and parent volunteers to participate in muster, workshops, singing and assembly.  This annual spring event integrates studies of social studies, English language arts, and physical education as children learn about and participate in marching in ranks, pitching tents, writing diaries, playing music, eating and other workshops.

YCSD Hosts Second Annual "Energy Throw Down"

From April 24 - May 24, 2013, students and staff from throughout the Yorktown Central School District will be participating in the second annual competition to see which building can save the most energy. All are invited to brainstorm ways to conserve energy and reduce the carbon footprint. All school calendars have suggested ideas, including turning off water, using eco-friendly water bottles, reusing copier paper and more. On the final day, a district-wide “Earth hour” will be held where all will be asked to turn off lights, computers, and other electronic equipment to help conserve energy. In June, the electric bills from the previous months will be compared to see which building team saved the most energy, and the winner will be presented the “Green Light Bulb” award.  Last year, Mohansic Elementary won the coveted award.  Which school will save the most energy this year?
